The 73rd Phidian Art Show opens on Tuesday, Mar. 31, at the Loveland Community House, located at 513 W. 2nd St., in Dixon. The exhibit of original artwork and awards presentation takes place in the venue’s lower level.

The show puts local artists’ work in the spotlight and awards are given in a variety of categories, including American and regional scenes, nature, best floral, landscape, oil painting, watercolor painting, and pen and ink entries. The show was started in 1947 by the club, a group formed in 1890 to promote art, literature and music. The pieces will be on display through Apr. 30.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for viewing and voting. Presentation of awards begins at 7 p.m. Awards are given in a variety of categories, including American and Regional scenes, nature, creativity, realistic style, multicultural, best floral, best landscape and “Reflections of the Past” awards. All awards are monetary prizes. The Phidians will be awarding more than $3,500 in prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Many are memorial awards in remembrance of special people. It is through their generous support that the art show continues to be the highlight of the year for the ever-growing artistic and cultural scene in the Sauk Valley area.

Artwork will be received in the lower gallery of the Loveland Community House Thursday and Friday, Mar. 26-27, from 2-6 p.m., and Saturday, Mar. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entry fee is $15 for one artwork and $25 for two artworks. There is a two-artwork limit. Artwork will remain on display in the Loveland Building through Apr. 30.

Artists must live within 35 driving miles of Dixon and 17 years of age or older. Only two-dimensional paintings or drawings, in any medium, will be accepted. Artwork must be original, not produced under the direction of an instructor, no more than five years old, and never have been entered in a previous Phidian Show. All work must be ready for hanging by wire, no larger than 48” in width, or exceeding 25 lbs.
